Kati Heckmann

Art Teacher, German Track

kati.heckmann@gspdx.org
I was born and raised in a little town in Bavaria and have been in the States for more than 25 years now! When I was pregnant with my first child, I started to study at Portland Community College. In 1991 I earned my Associate of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education. For several years I worked at Mountain Park Playschool, first as a preschool teacher and then as the head teacher for their school age program. After the birth of my second child I started my own childcare business. In the summer of 2000 I received a phone call from the German International School offering me a teaching position in the preschool program, which I accepted. I taught preschool for four years until I was asked to teach kindergarten in 2004, and eventually elementary school. My belief that we are all lifelong learners moved me to pursue my Masters in Teaching, which I completed in the spring of 2013. Now I might take a little break from furthering my own education and focus on the many hobbies I put on hold while earning my Masters!
