Raising Fish From Egg to Fry

Don't worry, we're not frying any fish!

The term refers to the the stage of growth a fish baby comes to when it hatches from its egg sac, as GIS 4th graders traditionally learn every year as part of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Fish Egg to Fry Program.

As part of their IB unit about water, students this year were eager to raise little fish, observe their changes and finally release them into the wild.

Students learned about the changes that occur from fish egg to fry and were able to observe our brood during in-person meetings once a week and through a live stream that was set up.

In early January we organized a socially-distanced opportunity for students to release the fry into the Tualatin River in Cook Park so that they can start their journey to the ocean.
