Researching and Walking Through the Neighborhood

Grade 5 students toured the community around our school in Beaverton by foot today. Students explored and collected evidence for the unit: "Humans form communities based on their needs and local recources". The group is just at the beginning of their inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme: "How we organize ourselves". The teams were interested in finding types of buildings, different zones and how new buildings are different. They noticed that some of the new apartment buildings have stores on the ground floor, while older apartment buildings have garages on the ground floor. They documented their findings with the camera. On the way through old town students admired murals from artist Drew Merritt and the public park.

The group walked 4 miles through the neighborhood in almost 2 hours.
