German Schools of Excellence

Deutsche Exzellenzschulen 德国优秀学校

The German International School is one of the eight North American German Schools Abroad (Boston, Brooklyn, Montreal, New York, Portland, Silicon Valley, Toronto and Washington DC) that is accredited by the Federal Republic of Germany’s Central Office for Schools Abroad (ZfA) and meets their rigorous accreditation standards. Our program also follows Oregon state standards and IB World School accreditation requirements.

As part of maintaining this accreditation, we test our students’ content skills in 3rd, 6th, and 8th grade using the German-based VERA test. Third graders are tested in language and math and fifth graders are just tested in language.

The ZfA of the German Federal Office of Administration supports over 1,200 schools worldwide mainly in public-private partnership. Most of these schools are international schools, and are open not only to children of Germans working abroad, but those who want a German education for their children. Three out of four students at these schools are from the respective host countries or other cultures, giving students the chance to familiarize themselves with Germany, its culture, and language.
