German International School is an IB World School

GIS is proud to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). A globally recognized curriculum framework for students ages 3 to 12, that promotes academic, social, and emotional development through inquiry based learning and international mindedness.

The PYP Emphasizes student agency, encouraging learners to take ownership of their learning through voice, choice and action. At its core is the cycle of inquiry, where students explore, analyze, take action, and reflect, developing the key traits of the IB Learner Profile along the way.

Structured around six transdisciplinary themes: Who We Are, Where We Are in Place and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How the World Works, How We Organize Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet - the PYP helps students connect knowledge across subjects and develop a deeper understanding of global issues.

At GIS, the Programme of Inquiry (POI) guides how these themes are taught across grade levels and tracks. It complements the academic standards for Thuringia, Germany and Beijing, China, and ensures a vertically and horizontally aligned curriculum. Each Unit of Inquiry (UOI) explores a central idea with supporting concept skills and subject connections. The POI is a living document, continuously refined to support new directions in student learning while maintaining curricular balance and coherence.
