About German International Middle School
-
German International is a globally minded school. Our Middle Schoolers learn alongside students and teachers from around the world, develop fluency in a second language, and graduate with a real understanding of cultures beyond their own. They are not learning about the world from a textbook. They are part of it.
A global education at this age prepares students for the increasingly international high schools, universities, and careers they are heading toward. It also shapes the kind of adults they become: curious, open-minded, and at home in more than one culture.

Class sizes stay small on purpose, so every student is known by their teachers and challenged at the right level.

Music and the arts are part of every Middle Schooler's week at German International, treated as core curriculum rather than as an extracurricular. Aligned with the IB Learner Profile, our arts programming helps students develop as reflective, open-minded, and balanced individuals. Whether they are composing a piece in music class or exploring visual storytelling through mixed media, students are encouraged to take creative risks and express their perspectives with confidence.
In a stage of life that often pushes adolescents toward conformity, the arts give our students a space to explore their identity, build emotional resilience, and connect across cultures. We are cultivating young adults who see and shape the world more thoughtfully.
-
Our community is small and close-knit and teachers know every student. Social-emotional learning is integrated across the program, not bolted on. Our students learn in an emotionally safe environment, surrounded by real friendships. This is the kind of school where adolescents stay themselves, build genuine confidence, and develop the resilience they will carry into high school and beyond.
-
Place-based learning sends our Middle Schoolers out into the Portland landscape and the communities around them. They restore local green spaces. They meet with community leaders. They design solutions to real-world problems for real audiences. The work is grounded in real issues, which means our students develop critical thinking, collaboration, and a sense of environmental and social responsibility through doing, not just studying.
This is how Middle Schoolers start imagining their place in the world and learn to see their impact and their potential.
Learning through place and purpose.
At GIS, Middle School students take an active role in their education. Through place-based learning, they explore their local environment and community as part of their academic experience. Projects are grounded in real world issues, encouraging students to think critically, work collaboratively, and take meaningful action.
This experiential, integrated approach fosters practical inquiry and communication skills, creative and innovative thinking, and environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
Whether restoring a local green space, meeting with community leaders, or designing solutions to real world problems, students learn to see their impact and their potential.
Athletics and community building
GIS middle school students have the opportunity to compete in the Metro Christian League (MCL) alongside schools such as Oregon Episcopal School, Catlin Gabel, and The French International School. The MCL emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy competition across a variety of team sports.
Through athletics, service projects, and collaborative learning, students build confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging.
Creativity not as an extracurricular
At GIS, music and the arts are integral to the middle school experience. Aligned with the IB Learner Profile, our arts programming helps students develop as reflective, open minded and balanced individuals. Whether they’re curious about composing a piece in music class or exploring visual storytelling through mixed media, students are encouraged to take creative risks and express their perspectives with confidence.
In a time when adolescence often means conformity, the arts offer students a space to explore identity, build emotional resilience, and connect with multiple cultures. We hope to cultivate young adults who see and shape the world more thoughtfully.
