September Kick Off

The second week of the school year is already full of opportunities to connect and get involved. Here’s what’s happening at GIS:

Extended Program Special Clubs are Ready!

Without further ado — Fall Extended Program Special Clubs listing is available and registration is now open!

Parent Circle & Volunteering

Our first Parent Circle meeting is coming up on Tuesday, Sept 16, from 8:30–9:30 AM in the Murray Lunch Room. This is your chance to connect with other parent volunteers, hear what’s in the works, and share your voice. If you are considering running for a role on the Parent Circle Facilitation Team, please let Karin know by Sept 12. Voting will take place the week of Sept 29.

Volunteerism is also at the heart of GIS, and the library is looking for support. The beauty of volunteering in the library is that you don’t have to be a social butterfly — quiet helpers are just as welcome. Whether you’re helping in person or contributing from home, it’s a great way to connect with the community and support a space our students love. If you’d like to learn more, email library@gspdx.org for details and orientation times.

Summer Reading Challenge Rewards

Our Summer Reading Challenge was a huge success! This week we’ll announce which students have qualified for rewards. For Grade school and Middle School, Tier 1 students will enjoy ice cream at lunch, while Tier 2 students can look forward to our now legendary popcorn and movie night. Both events are scheduled for Friday, Oct 3. Early Learning families, your treats will be announced next week. If you misplaced your child’s tracking sheet or turned it in late, just contact library@gspdx.org to make alternative arrangements.

We’re proud to have two soccer teams with 22 players currently!

We have a double-header of soccer games this Friday, Sept. 12, on our home field at Tektronix — games at 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Come cheer us on!

Check out our Events Calendar for full game schedule!

Middle School Cross Country

Our Middle School Cross Country team is off to a strong start with 12 runners this season. The first meet takes place this Wednesday at Oregon Episcopal School.

Both the soccer and cross country teams are still open to new players.

Interested? Reach out to us, we’d love to have your student join the fun.

Oktoberfest Celebration with 4th and 5th grade Performances!

We are thrilled to announce that our students have been invited to perform once again at Oaks Park Amusement Park on Sept 19th! This is a wonderful and fun opportunity for our young performers to share their talents and then enjoy an evening of rides and festivities with their families.

Mooncake Sale: Support GIS & Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival!

We’ve partnered with 99 Ranch to bring mooncakes to our community. Every box purchased helps GIS, with 10% of proceeds returning to the school. Orders and payments are due by Sept 26. Package options include flavors of red bean, lotus, taro, egg yolk puff pastry, and more — six mooncakes per box! Order form here!

Thank you for celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with us and supporting GIS!

Adult Language Classes — Now Including Japanese!

Ever wanted to start a new language or continue your studies? Our adult classes begin on Tuesday, Sept 23, from 6:30–8:00 PM. This year we’re offering five levels of German, two levels of Mandarin, and for the first time, an introduction to Japanese. Registration closes Sept 20, and tuition is $340 per student.
