GIS Gives Back: Kids Filling Kitchens
When families have what they need, it’s easy to assume everyone else does too. But as Oregon faces the ripple effects of reduced SNAP benefits, thousands of local children are at risk of going hungry this season. At the German International School, our students are learning that small acts of generosity can fill more than stomachs. They can fill hearts, strengthen communities, and remind us that we’re all connected.
Learning to Give, the GIS Way
In our 3rd grade PYP unit of inquiry, “Selfless actions strengthen the entire community,” students explore stories of generosity and service from around the world. One story we always return to is that of Sankt Martin, the soldier who famously shared his cloak with a beggar in need. His compassion has become a cherished symbol within our school’s German traditions and an important lesson for our students: kindness is something you can choose to share.
From Story to Action
Each fall, GIS celebrates Martinstag through songs, crafts, and our beloved Lantern Parade, a joyful reminder that even one small light can brighten the dark. This year, our students are extending that spirit of giving through a schoolwide food drive, led by the third grade and the Grade School Student Council.
In partnership with the Sunshine Division, we’re collecting non-perishable food items now through December 6 to help families across Portland put meals on their tables this winter.
How to Get Involved
Families and community members can drop off donations at any of our three GIS campuses.
You can also involve your child by helping them choose a few favorite items to give, turning generosity into a family habit.
A list of the most useful donation items is available on the Sunshine Division website.

Together, we can show our children and our city, how global citizenship starts right here at home.
