Laternlein #3 - Mooncakes, XC Meets and Oktoberfest!
Our community is already buzzing with energy this fall, and the weeks ahead bring both Mid Autumn Festival and Oktoberfest celebrations with new opportunities to join in. Here’s what’s happening at GIS.

Check out this newsletter to catch up on the kick off meeting.
Mooncake Sale: Support GIS & Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival
This season, we’re partnering with 99 Ranch to bring delicious mooncakes to our community in honor of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Every box purchased gives back to GIS, with ten percent of sales returning to support our school. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate tradition while also helping our students. Orders are open now, with payment due by September 26. Families can choose from several mixed-flavor boxes, including red bean, egg yolk puff pastry, lotus, and taro varieties. There’s something sweet for everyone!
Adult Language Classes at GIS
Language learning isn’t just for our students, adults can join in, too! Our evening classes begin Tuesday, September 23, and run from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. This year, we are offering multiple levels of German, two levels of Chinese, and, for the very first time, an introduction to Japanese. Tuition is $340 per student, and registration closes on September 20. It’s a chance for parents, caregivers, and friends of the school to connect, learn, and stretch their minds alongside our community of little multilingual learners.
Music Performance at Oaks Park’s Oktoberfest
Our students are taking the stage! On Friday, September 19, the fourth-grade class and any interested fifth graders will perform at Oaks Park’s Oktoberfest celebration. The performance begins at 5:30 pm in the Family Festhalle, with performers asked to arrive by 5:15 pm. Fourth graders have been rehearsing during class, and the final run-through will be held this Thursday. Fifth graders who want to join in should plan to attend the rehearsal after school on Thursday from 3:30 to 4:15 pm. This performance is always a highlight of the fall, and we look forward to seeing our students shine in front of family and friends!
Picture Day Coming Soon
Mark your calendars for Picture Day, happening October 1 through 3. More details about the schedule, what to wear, and how to help your child feel prepared will be shared in our next newsletter. For now, we’re excited to introduce our new school photographer, Gerlinde Ashley. Gerlinde brings more than three decades of professional photography experience along with a deep understanding of our school culture, thanks to her background as a German immersion teacher. Originally from southern Germany, she has made Portland her home since 1998 and has worked with preschools and schools across the city. In addition to her photography, she has also served as a head teacher at Portland Kinderschule in Hillsdale for over a decade. With her warm presence and unique ability to make children feel comfortable in front of the camera, we know Picture Day will be something special.
After-School Clubs Begin
Our extended program’s after-school clubs are set to begin next week, and spots are filling quickly. Be sure to sign up soon to secure your child’s place in their chosen activity. The offerings this fall are diverse and engaging, giving students opportunities to explore interests, build friendships, and learn new skills outside of the classroom.
Phew! Is it Spooky Season Yet???
