Laternlein #4: News & Notes from GIS
Library Updates
For our young readers who participated in the Summer Reading Challenge: rewards notifications have been emailed this week.
If your child was expecting a reward (like ice cream or movie night) but you didn’t receive a notification, or if you have multiple children and aren’t sure who qualified, please reach out to the GIS library team. We’re happy to help clarify.
Soccer Season is in Full Swing
Our grade school athletes are off to a strong start, proudly representing GIS on the soccer field! Matches this week include:
Thursday, Sept 25 (Away at Forest Hills Lutheran)
– 4:00 PM: FHL 1 vs GIS 1
– 5:00 PM: FHL 2 vs GIS 2Friday, Sept 26 (Home)
– 4:00 PM: GIS 1 vs Valor 2
– 5:00 PM: GIS 2 vs TVA
Cheer them on, whether from the sidelines or in spirit! It’s wonderful to see our students learning teamwork, resilience, and the joy of play. (Teaser: Would a Spirit Store for Spirit Gear be cool?! Let Karin know!)
Last Call for Adult Language Classes
It’s not just the children who get to experience the joy of language learning at GIS! There are still a few spots left in our Adult Language Classes in German, Mandarin, and Japanese.
These classes are a wonderful way for parents, alumni, and community members to connect with our school’s international spirit while building new skills.
A New German Podcast
We’re proud to share that our very own German Teacher and Curriculum Specialist, Miriam Broersma, has launched a new podcast called SoVielDeutschMussSein.
This podcast is entirely in German and serves as a resource for teaching German as both a Foreign and a Second Language, as well as for everyday classroom support. It’s designed with teachers, educators at German schools abroad, and German-speaking families in mind, but anyone passionate about language learning will find it insightful.

Anna Fastenko offering coaching in Family Constellations
Parents, teachers, and staff are invited to join the systemic family constellations work offered by a certified coach Anna Fastenko, every 1st and 3d Wednesday evening of the month starting on October 15th. Learn a lot more info about this amazing offering, in this newsletter.
Last Call for Mid-Autumn Festival Mooncakes
We’re excited to once again partner with 99 Ranch to share the tradition of mooncakes with our community. Each purchase not only celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival but also supports GIS with 10% of all sales coming back to the school.
Orders are open now, with payment due by September 26. Choose from a variety of flavors, from classics like lotus and red bean to favorites like egg yolk puff pastry and taro. A delicious way to honor tradition and give back at the same time!
