GIS Sustainability Team Newsletter #1

Reducing Single-Use Plastics

We are continuing to limit the use of disposable plates, cups, and utensils at school events. Thanks to the generosity of our 1st grade families, all classes now have access to our new set of reusable “party dishes” for celebrations.

Choosing More Sustainable Materials

We now purchase biodegradable bowls for Early Learning snacks (though we still appreciate it greatly when you send bowls from home so we do not have to use those).

In the art program, we are avoiding glue sticks by using closable tubs with a sponge and glue.

Low-Waste Ideas for Classroom Celebrations

As holiday parties get underway, here are some simple, creative ways families can help reduce waste—without reducing fun:

Homemade Items (With Ingredient Labels)

Homemade foods typically use far less packaging than store-bought items. Please remember to label ingredients and be mindful of allergies.

Bring Your Own Dishes—or Use Our Reusable Set

Families are encouraged to bring a small reusable plate, cup, and utensils from home.
Classes may also borrow our reusable party-dish set as needed.

Innovative, Sustainable Items to Bring

  • A thermos of warm cider, tea, or punch for the whole class

  • Fruit platters or family-sized snack bowls instead of single-serve packages

  • Homemade crackers, sliced veggies, or bread chips

  • Water pitchers with citrus slices rather than bottled drinks

  • Cloth napkins you take home and wash afterward

  • A shared serving tray or board instead of individually wrapped snacks

Eco-Friendly Ideas for Parties at Home

If you’re hosting holiday gatherings, here are a few easy ways to cut down on waste: Drinks Without Single-Use Plastics

Use large pitchers, beverage dispensers, or drinks in glass bottles.
Label guests’ cups so each person uses only one.

Smart Dishware Strategies

Set up a simple “wash station” for reusable dishes, or invite guests to bring their own favorite cup or mug.

Reduce Food Waste

  • Serve meals family-style

  • Choose seasonal ingredients

  • Keep jars or containers available so guests can take leftovers home

Low-Waste Fun

  • Craft activities using natural materials like pinecones, twigs, or paper

  • Games without plastic prizes

  • A shared playlist, story circle, or sing-along

Thank You for Supporting a Greener GIS

Your willingness to embrace small changes helps reduce our school’s environmental impact and teaches our students that sustainability is a community effort. We’re grateful for your partnership.

We wish you a warm, joyful, and sustainable holiday season!
